Starting the process...

I've finally decided to take control of my life and ask for a referral for Gastric Bypass surgery.  I was skinny my whole life until about the age of 19 when I started gaining weight.  The reason for the weight gain was a combination of a thyroid issue, and the fact that high school was over and there was no structure left in my life.  I slept all day, stayed up all night, and ate whatever I wanted when I wanted it with no exercise.  Combine that with the fact that my entire family is overweight and I guess it was inevitable that I would end up in this place.

But, now it's time for a change and I'm determined to become healthy for both myself and my family.  I want to be an active mom and do all the fun things my family does instead of sitting on the side lines.  My weight has kept me from many many things including having the family I wanted.  I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2001 and because of that it took us more than five years, and multiple miscarriages, to become a mom.  I've always wanted more children but due to the weight issue, and now my age (I turn 40 this year), it doesn't look like we will be blessed with any more children.  But never say never.  First step though is getting healthy!!

So on August 8th, 2012, I went to see my family doctor to ask for a referral for gastric bypass surgery.  My doctor wasn't totally thrilled with my choice (I sense that she feels it's a cop out, a quick fix) but after many questions, she reluctantly said she'd put through the referral.  After getting my height (5'5") and weight (302lbs), Christina (the nurse) said she'd process my referral and that I should expect a letter in the mail as the next step.

Fast forward to today, August 20th, 2012 and my letter came in the mail today.  YaY!!  I am now registered for the education orientation session on Thursday, October 25th, 2012.  I'm so excited!!

I can't wait to get this process going...
